Lipids

This lecture series will cover:

  1. Lipids types and structures

  2. Viruses and Prions

  3. Nucleic Acids

Fatty acids are formed by long chains of hydrocarbons with a carboxyl group at one end.

Triacylglycerols:

  • Have 3 fatty acids chains on each glycerol, these are usually different fatty acids

  • Animal fats are usually more saturated (solid) and plant fats are unsaturated (liquid)

  • Functions:

    • Insulation

    • Protection

    • Storage of energy

Phospholipids are when the third position on glycerol is occupied by a phosphate.
